Daniel Cowart, 20, from Tennessee, and Paul Schlesselman 18, from Arkansas, are charged with making threats against a presidential candidate, illegal possession of a sawn-off shotgun and conspiracy to rob a gun dealer.

The pair, who indicated they were willing to die during the assassination bid, also planned to target an unnamed high school with predominantly African American students.

The plot did not appear to be very advanced or sophisticated, according to the court documents.

"We're unsure of their ability or if they have the wherewithal to carry out any of their threats," said a source close to the investigation.

The suspects met over the internet about a month ago, the court was told by an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The court documents alleged the two men met about a month ago and found common ground in their shared "white power" and "skinhead" philosophy.

"The individuals began discussing going on a 'killing spree' that included killing 88 people and beheading 14 African Americans", one written statement said.

"They further stated that their final act of violence would be to attempt to kill/assassinate presidential candidate Barack Obama," it continued.

Cowart and Schlesselman remain in custody and are due to return to court on Thursday for a detention hearing, reports the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper.

They wrote racially motivated words and symbols on the exterior of Cowart's vehicle, including a swastika and the numbers 14 and 88 on the hood of the car.

ATF special agent James Cavanaugh said "H" is the eighth letter of the alphabet and 88 stands for "Heil Hitler".
Mr Cavanaugh said authorities were taking the threats very seriously.

"They seemed determined to do it," he said, "Even if they were just to try it, it would be a trail of tears around the South."
